Beyond the Basics: Weaving

"Beyond the Basics: Weaving" is a three session class designed to give the student a set of tools for problem solving a weaving project.

During Session One, you takes a simple two shaft log cabin draft and translates it into a weaving plan suitable for your own loom. The students learns various drafting conventions and how to read them.
We will also explore various yarns appropriate to weaving the log cabin pattern.  You learn how to alter the pattern and structure to fit the loom.  The fun is learning how to take your vision for what you want to see in the fabric and weaving it into cloth.

During Session Two, you will  finish winding your warp and threading the loom.  Your weaving skills should be good enough to warp and thread without much supervision.

When you finish winding your warp, and threading the loom, you weave in a header and check for threading or sett errors.
During Session Three, we will talk about how and when to use a floating selvedge thread and how to adjust your sett without rethreading the reed.  And, of course, you will weave your pattern design.
You will learn how to weave with two shuttles and different ways to make sure the edge threads catch on each pass so that you still get tidy selvedge edges.  We will practice replacing or repairing a broken warp thread when, not if, that happens.

The Particulars:

1. Supplies: You are expected to supply your own thread for weaving. 8/2 cotton or cottolin will work fine.
2. Warping boards are available for your use.
3. There are a limited number of looms in the shop. If you do not have your own loom, you may borrow from the shop. However, it would be best if you bring your own table loom or portable floor loom.
4. Come prepared to learn new weaving techniques, to meet new weaving buddies, and to have a great time!
